It’s one of the biggest days of your lives. The day you get to meet God’s design, His gift to you, His child, your child; the one he has created and knows the number of hairs on their heads. Unfortunately, due to our uneducated culture towards birth and labour and delivery, our minds are cluttered with education, preparation, possibly fear and anxiety and questions listed for our care providers and doulas. We are busy preparing and in our preparing we tend to forget the aspect of our faiths and how it can be included in the process. When I was pregnant, my faith grew. I couldn’t imagine how my body was creating life, was intricately designing bones, muscles, a heart, lungs, brain… even a NERVOUS SYSTEM! The intricate designs happening within my body, and the realization of the Maker and His creativity of this process. It blew my mind. I praised Him, I was thanking him for the gifts within my womb. I couldn’t believe people could not believe in God as I saw ultrasounds of my boys. That He is good and was good to me! I was blessed with 3 boys. When it came to labour, honestly, I forgot to include Him… While I praised God once I held my sweet babies, I never tapped into his Spirit during the labour process. What a missed opportunity to experience Christ, share Christ and tap into his Holy Spirit. We are told in Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT): 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. As a doula, I love to I tap into His presence and ask for all the fruits of the spirit within the birth room, and I encourage my families to do the same. I pray over my families and ask for His love to cover them, to protect them and feel his love. Imaging taping into the fact that God loves you in this process and he will take care of you! I bring my joyful spirit and love for birth. I keep high energy and lighten moods with jokes and enjoyable conversation. Imagine joy pouring out of your soul, either in worship or prayer as you prepare to meet your baby! I pray for peace in the decision-making process of birth. Imagine confidence in the decisions you make for your body and baby. Trusting the Holy Spirits guidance of peace in the process. I pray for patience in Gods timing of length of labour. Imagine the trust that comes through patience in the unknown process of labour and delivery. I bring kindness to my families and show goodness by being an active servant of Christ. I have learned to become self-less in a birth room and pray “Lord, how can I bless this family? How can I love on them and provide any type of comfort?” Imagine having a faith-filled doula, covering you in all this kindness and goodness! Or having your partner lovingly doting on you while filled with the spirit! I pray my mother’s find self-control and can find their inner strength. Imagine having heavenly strength to get you through the birthing process! Who wouldn’t want that?! If you were in one of my birth rooms, you would hear my quiet doula whispers in a mother’s ear, “He is here, He is with you. Tap into His strength, tap into His goodness. Let him cover you with peace and patience and self-control.” How amazing to have His guidance and spirit with you as you face the challenges and joys of births! I love having faith-filled births! Covering families in this type of love and prayer! Creating spaces where we can be authentically us, no shame and sharing Christ wherever we are (hospital birth or home). We can be disciples even in a birth room! I have sweet memories of a momma at a home birth, in my birth pool, arms raised in worship. Crying out to the Lord to give her strength. I also recently attended a hospital birth where we played the hymn “As the Deer” and began to worship. The nurse in attendance raised her hands in worship with us and cried out to the Lord to be with her. She later handed me a note saying that her sister passed two years ago and she really needed Christ.” WOW! That we can encourage people with our faith in the birthing process… we never know who we can reach or who our faith can touch! We really do have the opportunity to praise him, experience him and share Him. Before I leave every birth room, I get the honour to pray over every baby. I lay hands and thank God for His gifts and welcome this little baby into God’s family. I pray protection for guidance to the new parents. What amazing joy, to be able to create spaces of faith for these families. May the Lord continue to use me in this way and be a beacon of his light in every birth room I enter. Remember to include Christ in your birth! He’s already with you… |
